What could I hope to say about Christmas that has never been written before? This season is a time of memories, nostalgia, and feeling child-like enough to believe in a little magic. Well, it is for those blessed with loving families and enjoyable memories.
For others, it is a season they dread. They might remember being afraid when their family got together because there was sure to be an ugly fight. They might remember Christmases past when everyone but them received presents. This season may be a painful reminder of all they never had or of loved ones they did have but lost.
But Christmas has never been about having “all the trimmings.” Christmas is not about the decorations. It’s not about the parties. It’s not about the food. It’s not about the presents. And it’s only ever been about one family – the family of God.
Whether you have a feast for Christmas dinner or eat at the homeless shelter. Whether you have a Santa-sized bag of presents or none. Whether you were born into the best family or the worst…Christmas is for you.
Christmas is for all of us because Christmas is about Jesus. He came to earth – Emmanuel means “God with us” to give us the chance to become part of God’s family. Whether you love the season or dread the season, I have a message for you, or rather Scripture does.
Luke 2:10-11 “But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.”
Enjoy the trimmings of Christmas if you like, but remember the real reason, and remember to share that with others. Jesus was born to be our Savior, yes, every single one of us. May all of us who know Jesus already share the good news this season and always!
Merry Christmas!
